Ghostly doings at the Glenbar, a residential hotel that burned down two weeks before and is slated for imminent demolition; as the wrecking crew experiences weird, sometimes dangerous mechanical failures, Benny and Jonathan sneak inside for one last look around. Jonathan is promptly possessed by, in turn, the ghosts of seven people who died in the fire: a snooty desk clerk, a small boy, the boy's father (a washed-up pugilist whose name Benny recognizes from the fighter's halcyon days), a Russian émigré, a genteel elderly Southern woman, an old movie star of the swashbuckler epic era, and finally, the brother of the man who inadvertently started the fire.
